Parent Forum Perks with the Principal
Posted 01/09/2018 01:52PM

Following are the notes from our Parent Forum Perks with the Principal.

Exact words from parents:

Principal response to parents:

1. Great communication with staff/teachers. I love the class dojo system.

2.Best school in the universe, best principal in the universe, best teachers in the universe.

3. Great teachers and staff! Clubs are awesome!

4. I love how all the staff greets the children with big smiles in the mornings.

5. High energy, diversity, great variety of clubs, highly involved staff

6. From what I’ve seen the staff seems to genuinely care about the kids. Please let your staff know this.

Thank you!

I’ll share with our teachers and staff.

7. Communication from PTA needs to be improved.

7. PTA is making some changes in board members and will focus on communicating consistently with board members and to PTA members.

8. Communication in general, overall. Need a better way to flow communication to all parents at the school level and also parent/teacher communication.

8. Mr. Wimbrey spoke with the parent who wrote this and the parent shared ideas to mainstream communication the way another campus does. We over-communicate purposely to reach different generations and kinds of families (weekly team newsletters, monthly parent letters from principal, monthly email from principal/secretary, class dojo daily, Skylert voice messages for special occasions),  but we will learn how to mainstream on skyward for next year so parents can archive and view general messages regularly.

9. Can construction cones out in front of the school property be removed?

9. Mr. Wimbrey contacted the city and the city contacted the contractors who inadvertently left the cones along the edge of the road after construction last Summer. Cones were removed after this call the next day.

10. We need to make known all the activities, clubs, field trips, parties, performances, competitions, awards ceremonies, etc that the school does on and off campus.

10. We still do not have a list of all these. Mr. Wimbrey will ask PTA to find a volunteer to make build this list and share it on our social media pages, campus website, and hard copies in the front office.

11. When will we no longer be a Title I school?

11. We currently have 52.6% of our students who are economically disadvantaged. As long as our campus has over 40% students economically disadvantaged we will qualify for Title I funding. We are projected to quickly gain families who aren’t economically disadvantaged over the next 2 years. So, it is estimated that our campus only has 2 more years of being a Title I school.

12. How can we push PTA membership?

12. We include it our monthly principal newsletters. We announce and promote PTA membership at grade level music programs and meet the teacher night. PTA is seeking more ways to boost PTA membership.

13. What are the plans for school growth adjustments as the community grows?

13. Our student enrollment is slightly over half capacity with approximately 360 students. Capacity is at 750.  We are projected to reach capacity in 2 years (by 2019-2020.)  The district recently passed a bond package that includes as an elementary school in our attendance zone which will be completed just in time to divide our attendance zone with that new campus. This will bring our enrollment back down to probably 450-550 students.

14. When will we begin seeing bond money projects done?

 14. This summer 2018, our campus is scheduled to have construction on the parking lots, sidewalks, crosswalk to the neighborhood behind campus, science lab inside the school, and playground turf installation. This is projected to be completed by the end of summer.

15.  I wish we had a large United States Map painted on the playground or sidewalk to the front entrance of our building. It would be a great visual for students to learn about the location of states.

15. I will share this idea with our volunteer church who offers to paint images on our sidewalks for us. It would be best for us to do this on our basketball court near the playground. Great idea!

16.  I wish I was able to chaperone my daughter’s field trips even though she has a younger sibling that I don’t have other care for.

16. We have found ways for parents who have this dilemma to come to other events and to volunteer, but we still cannot have younger siblings on field trips only because our students must be supervised by chaperones. Our district only allows teachers, administrators, chaperones, and students on field trips. I’m sorry.

17.  I wish we had a crosswalk with a crossing guard in the street.

17. This is included in our bond package and should be completed for next year.

18.  Crossing guards.

 18. Crossing guards will be provided by the district once the crosswalks are put in this summer.

19.  Music Programs (music/instruments lessons)

 19. We will share this idea with our staff to see if we can come up with a way to do this.

20.  More technology for our students.

20. We are requesting more technology also. Students use computers/iPads daily at our campus. We purchased 3 more iPads this year with fundraiser money. We have 3 iPads per classroom and one iPad cart. We eventually want 22 iPads per classroom.
